NRHL 5503: Evidence-based Nursing Practice: Research and Process Improvement: PICOT

What is PICOT

The document from your professor gives the background information you need. So, I will go directly into searching CINHAL. Here is a step-by-step process for formulating a search. The topic I will use is:

Does the use of heel protection protocol in supine positioned surgical patients decrease the incidence of heel pressure ulcers?

The bolded  words are key concepts we are going to use in our search in CINAHL. Our job then is to convert these keywords in a PICOT framework and then convert them into the Subject Headings indexed  by CINAHL. Locate synonyms or related terms for all the key concepts, limit the records to only those where the first author or second author is a nurse. This may sound daunting, but it is not. Once you understand the question, you can proceed. I already talked about the use of AND OR NOT. so, we write our search procedure taking all this into account.

I will attach a worksheet to help you with this process.  Before you go further put the search above in PICOT format

P           Population Problem or Patient          Supine positioned surgical patients

I             Intervention  or exposure                  Heel protection protocol

C            Comparison  or Control                    Either types of heel protection OR absence of heel protection

O            Outcome                                           No heel ulcers

T             Time                                                 We are going to keep this blank, as not specified in the question

The next step is to find synonyms, related terms.
