I will talk about databases and indexes and their arrangement in a database. About Primary, secondary and Tertiary Literature. And about subject searching using the Boolean connectors AND, OR, NOT, with key word searching and subject searching using subject headings and controlled vocabulary.
What is controlled vocabulary? Controlled vocabulary is a standardized, pre-defined set of terms used by a database to describe and categorize articles or sources of information based on content. Controlled vocabulary can also be referred to as Subjects, Subject Headings, Subject Terms, Descriptors, Thesaurus, or Index terms
What is Boolean. Boolean is a way of combining key words, subject headings in some meaningful way to retrieve records as close as possible to your topic of research. OR is used in between synonyms or related terms, so you will get a larger set of records. AND is used when you want multiple concepts to key words or subject headings in your search. NOT is self- explanatory. Exclude unwanted concepts.
What are Primary, Secondary, and tertiary Sources?
Primary source is a research work created, executed, and published by a research scientist or a group pf researchers. It is original work and usually has data to support the conclusions of the research. It is published in a journal and is sanctioned by a review of the researcher's peers.
Secondary sources are sources that talk about the primary sources. Research based on primary sources. The difference between a biography and an autobiography.
Tertiary Sources are those that explaining primary and secondary sources. Examples are Review Articles, Encyclopedia descriptions, and books (health sciences).
For more information see the Research Guide on Primary Sources
Literature Review: is an analysis of background information for a research project. You cannot move forward till you know what work has been done before. Most scholarly literature ie. journal articles have specific sections. It usually starts with an Introduction which includes a Literature review that tells you gaps in the knowledge base that the research project is going to fill.
Revie Article: Is done by a prominent expert in a field who synthesizes the literature from development and implications for its future on the topic of interest. A good place to look for background info.
Systematic Review is usually a computer analysis of multiple studies on a prescribed topic based on pre-determined conditions that need to be met.
The topic I am going to address is:
Does the use of heel protection protocol in supine positioned surgical patients decrease the incidence of heel pressure ulcers?

How to do a subject search. Indexers at the publishing house for CINAHL map keywords or natural language words to specific phrases or terms to SUBJECT HEADINGS. So if we all come up with different keywords to do a search we will miss a lot of the literature. And our purpose to do a PICO search is to find "the best available evidence". We might miss key important research then and our mission to provide the best care to our patients will be lost.
The video you just watched shows you how to do a keyword search. Now we are going to convert the keywords to subject headings.
Two ways of doing this
1. Pick the subject headings of some of the result sets in your keyword search.
2. Use the key words to translate to subject headings.
