Information Literacy: Assessment: Introduction

At Benedictine University, our Inquiry General Education Curriculum is at the heart of all undergraduate degree programs. Upon graduation from Benedictine University, all students must demonstrate competency in 8 university-wide inquiry goals one of which addresses Information Literacy. 

In Goal #3: Information Fluency, students will be assessed on their ability to

• Navigate different information formats and media technologies to find pertinent information
• Evaluate sources of information critically to conduct responsible research
• Become an active, informed and creative user of established and emerging technologies

This wide-reaching goal extends across all disciplines and programs, which have developed their own Learning Goals, Objectives, and Student Learning Outcomes.

This guide will provide suggestions on how to integrate these outcomes into programs using the criteria established by The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), the higher education association for librarians. .

The purpose of this guide is to provide a starting point for faculty and librarians as we strive to assess information literacy student learning outcomes, particularly those working with the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This guide includes:

• a document mapping the outcomes of the old Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education to the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education
• descriptions of each frame in the Framework and how they relate both to the Standards and the other frames
• sample learning outcomes for each frame
• sample assessment materials tied to these outcomes
