IDS 2202: Sustainability/Stewardship: Water and the Great Lakes: Internet Resources

This site links more than 200 environmental and natural resource organizations to act as a resource for nature or conservation-related activities such as habitat restoration, composting, urban gardening, energy conservation, recycling and wildlife conservation. This will provide students with an awareness of the myriad community organizations that augment government, science and business in pursuit of a healthy environment. The Waste, Recycling & Green Initiatives section of DuPage County informs the public about environmental issues impacting their health, well-being and safety and provide recycling opportunities to both residents and businesses. Categories identify recycling and disposal locations, green buildings, water conservation and energy efficiency. The 2011 Environmental Progress Report lists accomplishments and ongoing programs. Of particular interest is a section on community gardens.

People’s Resource Center has served our neighbors in DuPage County since 1975. PRC meets basic needs, including food, clothing, and rent assistance, and offers skill-building resources, such as literacy classes, job assistance, computer training and art.

Founded in 1972, The Conservation Foundation is one of the region's oldest and largest not-for-profit land and watershed conservation organizations dedicated to preserving and restoring open space, protecting rivers and watersheds and promoting stewardship of the environment in northeastern Illinois. WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. The list of topics is very comprehensive and would provide students with ideas for research projects, as well as a global view of the many health-related issues in the environment, including diseases, sanitation, and pollution of all sorts.

The Clean Power Plan proposed by the EPA is a very good focal point for an environmental learning community because it provides a future goal whereby our students can participate in learning about the issues and actually providing their own input to testimony on a current topic. The Clean Power Plan offers the newest governmental policy advances since the watershed policies enacting the Clean Water Act of 1970 and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.
