The most preferred citation styles in the sciences are as follows:
CSE--The Council of Science Editors. "The CSE Manual presents 3 systems for referring to references (also known as citations) within the text of a journal article, book, or other scientific publication: (1) citation–sequence, (2) name–year, and (3) citation–name. These abbreviated references are called in-text references. They refer to a list of references at the end of the document."
APA--The American Psychological Association Style Guide. "APA Style is used by writers in many disciplines around the world for concise, powerful, and persuasive scholarly communication."
ACS--American Chemical Society Style Guide. This guide is recommended for citing journal articles or other publications published by the American Chemical Society.
