Christine Fletcher is associate professor of theology at Benedictine University and an Oblate of St Procopius Abbey, Lisle, IL. At Benedictine she has designed a new Theology program which includes a certificate in Theology in Life. She holds a Masters in Politics and Philosophy from Oxford University and a PhD in Theology with subspecialties in Business ethics and literature from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England.

She has worked in various fields including merchant banking and IT consulting as well as having edited a magazine on business ethics. Among her academic presentations was a paper at a conference at the Vatican sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. While living in England she occasionally appeared on BBC1's Heaven and Earth discussing ethical questions.

She has been married to her husband Peter for 39 years, and they have four grown children.

Dr. Mardelle Fortier

Award winning author, Dr. Mardelle Fortier has won numerous poetry prizes, particularly through Poets and Patrons of Chicago. Dr. Fortier is the author of close to 100 published poems, 25 short stories, and 10 book reviews. Before her retirement, Dr. Fortier served an instructor in the Benedictine University Writing Program. She has also taught creative writing and composition at several Chicago area colleges.

Dr. Rita George-Tvrtkovic

Rita George Tvrtkovic Dr. George-Tvrtković is a historical theologian with expertise in medieval and contemporary Christian-Muslim relations. She has taught at Benedictine since 2009 and was previously associate director of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. She has written two books—most recently, she published "Christians, Muslims and Mary: A History" (Paulist Press, 2018). In 2020, Dr. George-Tvrtković was appointed by Pope Francis to serve as consultor to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

The article focuses on the alliance between Muslim Ottomans and Christian Frenchmen in the 16th century and its manifestations. It reconstructs the events of 1543-1544, the wintering of the Ottoman fleet in the French port of Toulon. It is argued that the Ottomans and the French did not consider their allies from religious perspective alone, as such their religious differences did not prevent them from conducting joint military action against their mutual enemies.

There is, among the correspondence in the Ottoman archives dating to the reign of Süleyman, an intelligence report of one Mehmed of Draç who transmits information he obtained from a merchant recently returned from Spain, France and Italy. The report reveals the Ottoman preoccupation with the two events in Europe which most affected the ability of Süleyman's enemy, Charles V, to respond to Ottoman pressure. The conflict between Catholics and Protestants as evinced in this document shows that the Ottomans understood the importance of the Lutheran threat to Charles V's power as early as 1530. The document also points to Ottoman interest in the diplomacy of the period which centered around the rivalry between Francis I, king of France, and Charles V. The historical significance of this report lies in the evidence it provides that the Ottomans were informed and interested participants in the events of sixteenth-century Europe. They sought intelligence and obtained information for their military and diplomatic strategy, basing their actions on informed decisions.

The article discusses the development of tales about the French women in the Ottoman sultans' harem, which were used to support political aspirations. Due to the limited contact of the women in the harem, it provided an opportunity for the invention of tales that have been incorporated to history. The presence of French women with royal connections was used for political purposes from sixteenth to the twenty-first century. The tales fall into two groups: myths about a fictional fifteenth-century French princess and fantasies concerning Nakshidil, a nineteenth-century valide sultan. The earlier myths that explained the alliance between the Ottoman sultan and the king of France, lost its political significance with the entrance of Nakshidil in the imperial harem.

This essay compares the use of "foreign" state servants in the early-modern kingdom of France and the Ottoman Empire. In both realms, identity was understood as a matter of loyalty not to a defined territory but rather to a dynasty; hence service to the dynasty offered a ready path for assimilation. For a contemporary Ottoman historian, "the inhabitants of Rum" were a people of diverse origins, often descended from converts to Islam. For French jurists, the basic component of citizenship in the kingdom was personal choice; thus French "identity" was gained or lost as outsiders chose to serve the king, or natives of France chose to serve one of his rivals. This fluidity in matters of identity may be illustrated by three careers. George Paleologus Dysphatos (d. 1496), having converted to Roman Catholicism, rose to prominence under Kings Louis XI and Charles VIII, while a man known only as Hüseyn, the subaşt of Lemnos, was important as a diplomat and intelligence-gatherer in the service of Sultan Bayezid II; only from a chance reference in a letter of Charles VIII concerning Hüseyn do we know that he was George's cousin, obviously a convert to Islam. Christophe de Roggendorf (1510-post 1585) who was an Austrian nobleman and who had fought in Austrian armies against Ottoman forces. When Emperor Charles V ruled against him in an inheritance dispute he switched sides, moving to Istanbul where he served Sultan Süleyman for a time. But since he would not convert to Islam, preventing his being eligible for an important office, Roggendorf changed his allegiance again, ending his active career as an honored commander and diplomat under Kings Henri II and Charles IX. As these examples suggest, this was an era in which rulers competed for the loyalty of talented men, regardless of their origins, and potential state servants chose identities that served their own ambitions. Due to the fact that an Ottoman princess never succeeded to the throne, princesses are usually dismissed as political ciphers lacking power or influence. Mihrimah (Mehr-o-māh), the only daughter of Süleyman (Solaymān) and his concubine (later wife) Hurrem (Khorram), wielded more power during her father's reign than did her brothers. Together with her mother, and her grand vizier husband, Rüstem (Rostam) Pasha, she belonged to the most powerful faction of her father's reign. Rare among Süleyman's favorites, these three never lost his regard leading to loss of status and/or life. By examining Mihrimah's architectural patronage, her correspondence with her father, her amassment of great wealth, and her involvement in administrative appointments and decisions regarding military expeditions, this article analyzes the particular quality and origin of Mihrimah's influence and power. It argues that because Mihrimah was female and ineligible to succeed to the sultanate, she was able to develop a closer relationship with her father than could his sons who were candidates for the throne, and thus potentially could revolt against him. This closeness continued even after death, for Mihrimah was the only one of Süleyman's children to be buried with him in his tomb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sarah Blossom Ware was born to hippie parents in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1974. When she was three years old, she moved with her parents and two-year-old brother to the Ozark Foothills where she lived out her youth as an Arkansas hillbilly. Sarah has written a humorous yet true snapshot memoir entitled Hillbilly Justice on the School Bus documenting her childhood experiences.

Sarah received a doctorate degree in 2006 from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She currently resides with her husband and four daughters in the Chicago area where she teaches in the Department of Biological Science at Benedictine University. (From Amazon Author Central)

Dr. Ovid Wong

Ovid K. Wong is currently an associate professor at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. He holds a joint appointment with the School of Education and the College of Science. He received his B.SC. and Dip.Ed from the University of Alberta in Canada, his M.Ed. from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Illinois. His experience in public education spans more than 20 years, from the urban classroom in Chicago to the suburban office of the assistant school superintendent.

In 1989, Dr. Wong received the National Science Foundation's Outstanding Science Teacher in Illinois award and the Science Teaching Achievement Recognition (STAR) award from the National Science Teachers Association. In the same year, he visited the former Soviet Union as the science delegation leader with the student ambassador program. He was the first recipient of the outstanding alumni award from the University of Alberta in 1992 and the first recipient of the distinguished alumni award from the College of Education at the University of Illinois in 1995.

In the summer of 2012, Dr. Wong was invited by the Department of Foreign Expert Affairs in China to train young faculty at Dalian Nationalities University.

He is the author of 28 books and had received the Midwest Book Author award from the Children's Reading Roundtable of Chicago. His recent books are dedicated to coaching teachers and students to effectively prepare for the state-mandated examination in Illinois and New York.
