Understanding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Resource Guide for BenU: Major Wars and Conflicts

1936-1939 Arab Revolt

From the Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question: "The Great Palestinian Rebellion, or the Great Arab Revolt, as this uprising came to be known, lasted for three years and can be generally divided into three phases. The first phase lasted from the spring of 1936 to July 1937. With tensions throughout Palestine running high since the fall of 1935, the revolt was ignited in mid-April 1936 when followers of Qassam attacked a convoy of trucks between Nablus and Tulkarm , killing two Jewish drivers. The next day, the Irgun killed two Palestinian workers near Petah Tikva , and in the following days, deadly disturbances ensued in Tel Aviv and Jaffa. In Nablus, an Arab National Committee was formed and a strike was called on 19 April. National Committees in other cities echoed the call to strike, and on 25 April the Arab Higher Committee (Lajna) (AHC) was formed, chaired by Haj Amin al-Husseini , to coordinate and support a nationwide general strike, which was launched on 8 May."

From the Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question:

"The UN approves a plan to partition Palestine, and the British government prepares to withdraw from the country. Zionist forces put into motion a series of military operations to take most of Palestine by force. The fierce resistance, general but not centralized, put up by Palestinians and Arab volunteers, and the subsequent lukewarm intervention of Arab armies are insufficient to prevent the catastrophic loss of 78 percent of the land of Palestine. Out of the 875,000 Palestinians who live in the conquered territory that becomes Israel, 725,000 find themselves transformed into refugees, pushed out of the area; most of the depopulated towns and villages are destroyed." -IV., The Palestine War and the Nakba: 2 April 1947- 1 January 1950

The 1967 Six Day War

From the Associated Press: "The Palestinians claim the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip – areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war – for a future state. Some 700,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The international community overwhelmingly considers the settlements as illegal and obstacles to peace.

The West Bank is home to a number of hard-line settlements whose residents frequently vandalize Palestinians land and property."
