Setting Up an Account

  1. Go to http://www.ben.edu/library/
  2. Click on Databases > Choose Endnote Basic > Click on Sign Up and set up an account.  You will need to activate your account via your email.

Exporting Citations

EBSCO

  1. Choose the record you want to import from EBSCO
  2. On the right click on the Export icon with the green arrow
  3. Choose Direct Export to EndNote Web
  4. A window will pop up for you to sign into EndNote (if you aren’t already signed in)
  5. The record will be imported automatically into the Unfiled category

Science Direct

  1. Choose the record you want to import from Science Direct
  2. On the top click on Export
  3. Under format select RIS and content select Citation Only
  4. Click on Export
  5. Click on Save
  6. Login to EndNote,
  7. Click on Collect > Import References
  8. Browse for the file
  9. Under Import Option Choose Science Direct
  10. In the To section choose Unfiled or create a folder.

Google Scholar

  1. In the record you want to import from Google Scholar click on Cite
  2. On the top click on Export
  3. Under format select RIS and content select Citation Only
  4. Click on Export
  5. Click on Save
  6. Login to EndNote,
  7. Click on Collect > Import References
  8. Browse for the file
  9. Under Import Option Choose Science Direct
  10. In the To section choose Unfiled or create a folder.

PubMed

  1. Choose the record you want to import from PubMed
  2. In the upper right choose Send to > Citation manager
  3. The name of the file created is citations.nbib
  4. In EndNote choose > Collect > Import References
  5. Browse for the file Citations.nbib (which may be in your downloads folder)
  6. For import options click on Select Favorites and add PubMed (NLM) as the format and save the reference to an existing folder or create a new folder.

Creating a Bibliography

  1. Choose Format > Bibliography
  2. Choose the folder with the desired references
  3. For Bibliographic style choose select favorites and choose the appropriate citation style (JAMA, APA or CSE Style Manual 8th Edition N-Y)
  4. For file format choose RTF (rich text file)

Using Cite While you Write

  1. Click on Downloads
  2. Click on Download Windows with Internet Explorer plug-in
  3. Click on Run to install the program
  4. Open Word
  5. Click on the EndNote tab
  6. Login using your EndNote username and password
  7. Under Style:  Choose the citation style you want to use.
  8. When writing your paper click on Insert Citations to insert an in-text citation.
  9. Enter a search term to find your article and click on it in the list.
  10. The in-text citation will appear and the full citation will appear at the end of the document.
